Peter Maughan
Director and Solicitor
Peter Maughan, Solicitor and Director, founded the firm with his late wife, Jol.
Peter attended university locally and qualified as a solicitor in March 1978.
Peter is also a qualified and practicing commercial mediator.
Peter practiced criminal law both prosecuting and defending in his early days as a qualified solicitor and also became well known as a regional leader in the practice of clinicial negligence claims. However, these days he concentrates on residential and commercial conveyancing wills, probates and powers of attorney and supervises the general litigation practice.
In his spare time Peter is Chairman of the Newcastle Upon Tyne and North Northumberland RSPCA and an elected member of Gateshead Council.
Paul Mernin
Director and Solicitor
With over four decades of legal practice, Paul has built a robust career as a solicitor, gaining a wealth of knowledge in residential and commercial conveyancing, as well as expertise in wills, probate, and litigation through his work with various local firms.
Gemma Owens
Solicitor
Gemma is currently on Maternity Leave
Gemma Owens, Solicitor, joined Peter Maughan Law in February 2022.
Gemma attended University locally and qualified as a Solicitor in 2009.
Gemma regularly attends local networking events to include NE Property Collective, and other landlord focused events.
In Gemma’s spare time, she enjoys weekend touring caravanning adventures with her daughter and friends. See more about Gemma below.

Welcome to my little space on our website and thank you for taking the time to find out more about me.
I joined the firm in July 2024 and bring over 20 years of experience in Property Law. I qualified as a Solicitor in 2005 and have worked with both local and national firms, recently managing a regional office for a national conveyancing company. I handle all aspects of residential and commercial conveyancing, collaborating with clients, lawyers, estate agents, and introducers to achieve the best outcomes.
Property Law and helping people have always been my passions. Whether assisting first-time buyers or experienced investors, I find it rewarding to help clients with such pivotal moments in their lives.

Nerissa Bell
Legal Assistant
Nerissa joined Peter Maughan Law in 2022 as a legal assistant and conveyancer and has experience in conveyancing, wills and probate, and criminal law.
Joanne Hewitt
Conveyancer
Joanne has worked in the legal profession for many years and qualified as a Licensed Conveyancer in 2009, collaborating closely with local estate agents and mortgage brokers on sales, purchases, remortgages, and transfers of equity; in her spare time, she enjoys going to the theatre, indulging in a bit of wild swimming on pleasant days, and most importantly, spending time with her grandchildren.
Bethany Birtles
Legal Assistant
Bethany joined the firm in 2024 as a legal assistant, providing essential support to our fee earners. She works for the firm part time while studying Law at Northumbria University and hopes to one day qualify as a Solicitor.
